Why is sand coming out of my backwash?
Your pump may be too large or the sand level too high in the filter. When the filter is backwashing the water flow can cause the sand to rise high enough and overflow into the standpipe, which will allow the sand back into the pool. Backwash runs it through the sand in the opposite direction.

My shoot-from-the-hip guess is that even though it appears to be a 350# sand filter, the pump is too powerful for it. Either that or you have a damaged lateral in the filter that was defective or damaged during assembly of the filter. That’s my guess.

What to do if your sand filter is blowing out?
Remove the laterals from the sand filter by loosening them with a screwdriver. Clean out any debris that may have accumulated in the laterals and replace it with new sand or gravel if needed. Reattach the laterals to the sand filter, tightening them with a screwdriver.
What to do if sand is blowing into your pool?
They are plastic and will crack if you overtighten. Once you have the new ones in take a bucket or hose and fill the bottom of the filter with water so the water covers the laterals. Then pour the sand back in.
