Why is my pool filter not priming?

If it is less than 1/2 way up the skimmer it could be sucking in air at the skimmer. Also make sure the pump basket and the filter are clean. A really dirty filter can reduce flow and cause you to lose prime. Make sure the pump basket lid is getting a good seal by putting silicon pool lube on the lid o-ring.
How can I get the pump basket lid to come off?
You can also try to tap it all the way around – meaning – use a 2×4 or something to hook on one of the ridges, tap it a couple of times, move a couple of ridges COUNTERCLOCKWISE and tap again etc – always go COUNTERCLOCKWISE. It WILL eventually come loose.

Is the O-ring on the Hayward pump strainer included?
Some reviewers complained that that when you thread the strainer in that it bottoms out with the strainer being upside down (this is true) and that the original O-ring that was on the strainer fitting was not included with the new strainer (also true).
