Why is my hot water heater back drafting?

Why is my hot water heater back drafting?

The main reasons for backdrafting at the water heater are the poor vent installation and obstructions found in the vent pipe. This problem affects mainly the atmospheric gas type water heaters that use natural convection to remove the combustion products, known as exhaust gases.

How do you check a water heater draft?

To check for proper draft, I simply cup my hands around the draft hood without actually touching it. If the water heater is backdrafting, I’ll feel warm, moist air coming out of the draft hood.

What is water heater back drafting?

If a water heater backdrafts, it means that potentially hazardous exhaust gases are coming back into the home. Powervent water heaters won’t backdraft, but they cost more money, they’re more work to install, there’s more that can go wrong with them, and they won’t operate if the power goes out.

Do water heaters produce carbon monoxide?

Home furnaces and water heaters are a major source of carbon monoxide poisoning, usually from poorly vented fuel sources or leaking vent pipes.

What causes back drafting?

A “backdraft” in your home is created when an appliance or device uses combustion (an open flame) that isn’t properly vented, allowing the exhaust to be pulled back into the home.

How do you stop a back draft?

Most of the time, this is accomplished by cutting an opening in the roof and refraining from opening any windows or doors on or below the fire floor until conditions have changed. This means that no search and rescue can occur and no water is being put on the fire until the vertical ventilation can be completed.

Where to put a water heater in a mobile home?

A water heater located inside a mobile home, such as in a closet or alcove with no outside access, must be sealed-combustion-type so that there is no connection between the heater’s intake and exhaust and the home’s ambient air.

Why does my water heater have a draft?

Here’s a common scenario for water heater draft problems: an old 80% efficient furnace is replaced with a new, high efficiency furnace that vents through the side of the house, leaving the water heater vent an orphan. The illustration below, provided by the Minnesota Department of Commerce, Division of Energy Resources, shows what this looks like.

How big of a hot water tank do you need for a mobile home?

Because space is often limited in this closet or storage space, the water heater needs to be sized to fit those dimensions. It’s common to find anywhere from 40 to 60-gallon hot water tanks in conventional homes, but most mobile home water heater closets are only able to accommodate sizes of up to 30-gallon tanks.

Where is the draft hood on a gas water heater?

Every atmospheric vent gas water heater is equipped with the draft hood found at the top of each unit, where the venting pipe is attaching the water heater. Also, this is the place where the backdrafting can be identified. The simplest ways to check for backdrafting is to put hands around the draft hood, mirror or glass.

How can I test my water heater for backdrafting?

You can also use the lighter or matchstick beside the draft diverter, and if there is sufficient draft inside the vents, the flame will be pulled in. Or, suggested by the home inspectors put a smoke or a powder into the draft diverter, and if it spills back into the room, the test for backdrafting is positive.
