Why is my feed and expansion tank overflowing?

Why is my feed and expansion tank overflowing?

Faulty coil in the hot water cylinder Over time, this coil can become perforated, meaning there’s hole in the coil which allows water for the central heating into the domestic hot water being stored in the cylinder. This rise in water levels can then lead to the feed and expansion tank overflowing.

What causes a feed and expansion tank to overflow?

This rise in water levels can then lead to the feed and expansion tank overflowing. You’ll also be able to tell if the coil in the cylinder has perforated because the water from the taps will have a yellow or brown colour which is from the liquid for the central heating system.

Why does cold feed go through expansion pipe?

This is due to the weight in the water of the central heating tank versus the weight of the water in the expansion pipe. Because the weight is much lighter in the expansion pipe, the water then expands through the expansion rather than the cold feed.

Why is hot water back flowing into cold water tank?

This happens over a period of a 90 mins (water is only heated for 20 mins). Having looked in the tank I can see that water is being backfilling the large cold water tank not via the open vent pipe but the pipe at the bottom of the tank where the cold water should flow to the Cylinder.

Why is my boiler pushing hot water into the expansion tank?

I am having to run the pump on setting 3 as when I switch to setting 2 the boiler immidately shuts down. On 3 I am getting hot water going up the expansion pipe into the tank and both the 15mm supply pipe and the expansion pipe get to hot to touch and my loft is full of condensation. This problem seems worst when the hot water cycle is operating.
