Why does my swimming pool pump keep humming?
Swimming pool pump won’t start, pump is humming? Chances are it’s the Pool Pump Capacitor. Don’t buy a new pump, check to see if your capacitor is causing the issue first. Replacing the capacitor is much cheaper.Above Ground Hayward Pool Pump. Disclaimers: all opinions are my own, sponsors are acknowledged.
Why is my pool pump motor not working?
A capacitor provides the torque that gets the pump motor up to speed. If you can get the motor to spin by manually pushing on its blades, then it’s very likely that a failed capacitor is the cause of your motor problems. A bad capacitor may lead to the motor running at a higher amperage than it should. The higher the amps, the higher the wattage.
Why does my pump Hum but not turn on?
In manual it was under Motor hums but does not start: Check centifugal switch to see if stuck open or binding of motor shaft, Manual does say it has an overheat shut off too. Any ideas? Just when it was going so well. We are planning on having an electrician come out for it’s own electricity.
What to do if your pool motor just hums?
Scale or other corrosion can build up in certain parts of the motor and make it difficult to start. With the power turned off, examine the back of your pool pump’s motor. You will need to remove the cover and manually spin the motor shaft. If the shaft spins freely, replace the cover and try the motor again.

Why does my pool pump not spin the impeller?
Kill the power, open the strainer, pull the basket, and see if you can’t spin the impeller with your fingers. It could be the start capacitor. It’s an easy fix. Do a youtube search on replacing start capacitor on pool pump. Several come up. thanks guys. will try spinning the impeller and see if the capacitor is the issue.
What makes a pool pump start and run?
In a pool pump’s circuitry, the capacitor stores an electric charge that gets the pump motor running. Start and run capacitors store electric charges that start the motor and keep it running—no big surprise there. As these parts age, capacitors tend to lose their charge-storing capabilities.
Why does my Hayward pool pump make a humming noise?
Makes Noise: If the pump motor makes a humming sound when trying to start, you likely have a bad start capacitor. On Hayward pumps, these are the black cylinder mounted at the rear of the motor.
Why does my pool pump keep sucking air?
Pool pumps are supposed to be completely airtight: this is what keeps them primed and sucking water properly. So, when they start sucking air, that’s a problem. Usually, it’s because of a bad thread sealant, crack in the pump, an air leak in the suction line, a plumbing issues on the suction side of the pump, or a leaky valve stem.
What to do if your pool pump wont turn on?
If the motor does not turn on, check the breaker and timeclock switches. If the motor makes no noise at all, check the wiring and terminal connections. If the motor won’t come up to full speed, check the incoming voltage with a multi-meter.
Is there a problem with the Hayward pool pump?
The motor guys said it wouldn’t but just wanted to check here first. No it won’t cause any issues, just larger than you need. As long as the HP * SF is equal or greater than your old motor, it is fine. Ok, great. Thanks everyone!! That’s what they said as well.
What to do if your pool pump makes no noise?
If the motor makes no noise at all, check the wiring and terminal connections. If the motor won’t come up to full speed, check the incoming voltage with a multi-meter. If the motor is sparking and smoking, check the terminal wiring diagram for 230V. If the motor is loud, remove from pump and test briefly. If still loud, replace bearings/seal.
Why is my pool pump making a humming noise?
The Pool Pump is Making a Humming Noise and will not Start If your pool pump will not start and you hear a humming noise, check you impeller for any debris. If debris starts to build, it can block the impeller and disable the pool pump. To check the impeller, turn the power off to the pump and remove the screws in the middle of the pump body.

Why does my Hayward power Flo pump just hum?
My Hayward Power Flo pump just hums when I turn it on. Was running fine less then 24 hours ago. Any suggestions? Take a small hammer and tap the motor casing a few times, This can “free up” any dirt / rust on the motor armature, If tapping the pump motor a few times does not get the pump to go, let me know and I can suggest something else.
Is it better to have a noisy pool pump?
Our society tends to think bigger is better, but don’t be fooled. A pump with higher horsepower than you need could overwhelm your pool system and rack up your energy bill. More energy also means more noise. I’d rather take the quiet pump that is cost-efficient to operate—and I think you would, too.
