Why does my Hayward pool pump keep surging?
I have a Hayward Power-Flo Matrix 1hp. My pump has started surging or pulsing lately. I can tell because of the sound, and the hoses are always moving back and forth as if there is a slight pause in the pressure. Is this normal or should my pressure always be the same coming from my pump?

Three months ago it began to take longer and longer for the pump (Hayward Super II) to pull a head of water after cleaning the pump’s basket. It would sometimes take 4 or 5 minutes vs the initial 1 minute for the pump to acquire a full head of water and start working properly. The pump is located approximately 4 ft. above the pool’s water level.

Click to expand… I’d try lubricating the O-ring with pool lube. Then make sure the lid is tight. My pump was surging this morning; we had a nice old storm last night in Dallas and a crud load of leaves coughed up all over the pool and yard.

Makes Noise: If the pump motor makes a humming sound when trying to start, you likely have a bad start capacitor. On Hayward pumps, these are the black cylinder mounted at the rear of the motor.
