Why does my air conditioner in my car work sometimes and not others?

If the front AC is warmer than the rear I would check the valve that allows coolant to circulate through the heater core. Have some in the van adjust the temperature from fully hot to fully cold and watch it move. It is under the hood on the firewall. Here is a picture of it in my 2001 EX.

There is only one a/c and only one temperature of air comming from the a/c coils. What could be happening, and I think this would be rather rare, is that the “doors” in the system that direct air flow are not operating properly on the driver side. ie. they are in the fresh are or ambient air mode.

Why does my AC only work when I Am driving?
Your AC only working while you are driving might have to do with a low refrigerant level, or it may be an indication that your electric fans are not turning on. Try checking the fuse and relays for your fans to make sure they are turning on when you turn the AC on. My AC was working fine til today I just started my car an the AC just shut off.
