Why are drain pipes connected to the vent stack?
Basically,larger piping diameter allows longer distances between a plumbing fixture and its vent stack. If a plumbing fixture is located too far from the main building vent stack, then its own drain pipe must have its own vent stack connection piping.
How big of a vent do you need for plumbing?
At least one of the primary 3, or 4-inch, drainage stacks should continue up and through the roof without changing the pipe size. Other smaller vent pipes from other fixtures can connect to this full-sized vent pipe. Avoid the temptation to eliminate a full-sized vent in your plumbing system.

How many fixtures can be connected to a vent pipe?
In this configuration, a maximum of eight fixtures can connect to the same horizontal vent pipe leading to the main stack. Different circuit vents can be connected, together which provides a venting solution for buildings with a large number of fixtures, such as an apartment building.
