When should I replace my impeller?
You should check the impeller’s condition during Spring Commissioning and every 200 hours of operation. Correctly installed impellers may last for several years, but you should stick to a schedule of preventative instead of emergency maintenance.
What causes impeller to fail?
Impeller pumps generally fail in one of two ways. This is usually caused by running the impeller pump dry. Remember, the fluid being pumped provides the cooling and lubrication for the pump. This is often caused by a water inlet seacock not being opened or a plastic bag covering the water inlet.

Most sterndrive and outboard manufacturers advise you to change the gearcase oil in your lower unit every 100 hours or once a year (whichever comes first). Clean oil is critical for protecting the heavily loaded gears in your lower unit and preventing expensive damage.
Can you fill lower unit oil from top?
To add (“top-off”) oil install the top plug again, remove the bottom plug and put your oil bottle into the hole. Remove the top plug to release the vacuum and add the necessary amount of oil. Reinstall the top plug, then quickly reinstall the bottom plug. Check the oil level once again as described above.

Every 2 years. Never had a problem with one going out on us ever. Thinking I should change over to every year. Some good points small price to pay to be sure you stay on the water. Can I pick up a Globe impeller from my dealer or from Overton’s? You need more options on your poll. I change it when it breaks.
How to change the impeller on an alpha 1?
Your out drive splits into and you don’t have to pull the full outdrive to change the impeller. The marine mechanics are trying to take you and don’t let that happen. First on each side of the lower unit on the out drive there is two nuts on each side 5/8th 4 all together. Loosen them as much as possible.
How does a water pump impeller work on an outboard?
