What should I do if my gas boiler is not igniting?
Welcome to our 3-minute guide to diagnosing faults that cause a boiler not to ignite. If you’re having trouble with your boiler not firing up for central heating or hot water, this guide will help uncover some potential issues, and what you should do next. But first. Working on a gas appliance should only be done by a qualified engineer.
Why does my boiler not ignite in cold weather?
Like gas valve faults that give too much or too little gas, a boiler will lock out and display a fault code if the gas pressure isn’t correct. On a side note, if your boiler only refuses to ignite during cold weather, there’s a good chance it’s the gas meter that’s the problem.
Why is my igntxfr oil boiler not igniting?
Check case of IgnTxfr for a blister. You can usually hear the spark from the ignition electrodes fizzing just prior to the oil valve clicking open. No fizz = no spark! Can be due to the EBI ignition transformer over heating and failing. This in turn can be due to a control box fault.
Can a qualified engineer work on a gas boiler?
Working on a gas appliance should only be done by a qualified engineer. If you’re looking for a repair or are considering a new boiler, you can get quotes here. Or, if you’ve been contemplating a new boiler with a long warranty, we’d recommend BOXT.
What should I do if my boiler won’t ignite?
If your boiler is igniting, but you notice an orange pilot light or yellow gas pilot light, it could be producing carbon monoxide. This is an odourless, poisonous gas that can be fatal. The pilot light on your boiler should be crisp and blue. If it’s any other colour, turn off your boiler and contact a registered Gas Safe engineer to inspect it.

What happens if there is no pilot light in the boiler?
Without a pilot light, the boiler won’t be able to provide central heating or domestic hot water. The pilot light is a small blue flame that lights a larger flame when there a call for central heating and how water – if it’s burning orange or yellow there could be a carbon monoxide leak.
