What happens when you turn off the thermostat on a heat pump?
The thermostat reaches the desired temperature, the indoor unit shuts off, the air stops blowing, but the outdoor unit keeps on running. In the heating mode (if it’s a heat pump) it could eventually shut off on a high pressure safety device.
What should I do if my air conditioner is not shutting off?
Check the fan settings on your thermostat – the toggle should be in the AUTO position so that the fan only runs while the air conditioner is on. If the thermostat fan setting is ON, move it to AUTO – with the temperature set above the current room temperature, the thermostat should tell the air conditioner to shut off as well as the fan.
What happens if you turn off the a C compressor?
A power failure or turning off the breakers will of course shut it off immediately. Restart protection in the thermostat or condenser. It waits to turn on until the high side pressure has dropped down to help unload the compressor at start up. Yeah, I know about the restart protection in the thermostat, as the original post indicated.
Why is my fan not communicating with my thermostat?
Over time, relay switches can become stuck or damaged, preventing the thermostat from communicating with the fan. Essentially, this means that the fan isn’t receiving the commands you’re relaying to the thermostat.

Why is my air compressor cycling on and off?
We have a 1999 Coachman with a Duo-therm roof unit. We ran the fan on the unit all night long and most likely the compressor was cycling on and off all night. From what we could figure out the only reason the compressor was cycling was because of overload switch.
Why does my AC unit keep running even when the thermostat is turned off?
So even when the thermostat disengages the compressor contactor or stops sending the 24-volt signal the unit will continue to run. That is because the contacts are stuck and will not release.
What causes an air compressor to turn off?
When a compressor is running it’s dumping air into the tank, and when the pressure in that tank reaches the cut-out pressure setting, the pressure switch trips, and the compressor stops.
What causes a condenser to run but not shut off?
Old thermostat or damaged thermostat wire will cause the condenser to run and not shut off. Old thermostat wire loses the insulation and the copper which the insulation protects touches and feeds continuous voltage to the compressor contactor. Same thing with a damaged thermostat wire.
Why does my air conditioner compressor stay on?
If the compressor or the circulating fan and compressor remain on even after the temperature has been reached, you may have a defective relay on the board or the processor circuitry on the board may be at fault. In either case you will have to replace the complete control board.
Why does my air conditioner keep blowing cold air?
Temperature Control. If your air conditioner doesn’t shut off even though the set temperature has been reached, and continues to blow cold air, you may have a problem with the thermostat.
