What happens if pool water is below skimmer?
Low Water. Allowing the pool water level to drop too low, meaning below the skimmer, is a big no-no. If this happens, the pump will draw air instead, resulting in loss of prime and running dry. Catch this in time, stop the dry run, and you might have to say good-bye only to your shaft seal – but be sure to replace it.
Can I drain pool below skimmer?
Because there is no main drain on most aboveground pools, you will only be able to lower the water to the bottom of the intake or skimmer, using your aboveground pool filter system. You must always maintain the precise pool water level. If the water level is lower than half of the skimmer, or perhaps doesn’t even reach the skimmer inlet, your water level is too low. To correct this, raise your water level by topping it up with a hosepipe.
How does a skimmer hook up to a pool pump?
In this way, the two skimmer pipes connect underground with a Tee fitting, and then one pipe runs back to the pump. Because the main drain is not tied into the skimmer in this set-up, pool systems using this configuration usually also have a separate valve to control a separate main drain line that runs from the pool to the pump.
Do you booster pump have a skimmer pot on it?
Does you booster pump have a skimmer pot on it? If the water level is halfway up the skimmer in the pool but there is low water level in the pump’s skimmer pot you may have an obstruction between the skimmer and the pump that is reducing the flow of water to the pump.
Why is the air coming out of my pool pump?
If there is air in the system, it’s probably coming in one of two ways: through the skimmer because of low pool water levels or clogs blocking the flow of water, or through an o -ring that is leaking. If your swimming pool level is low, the problem can usually be fixed by filling it up.
Is there a way to get below a pool skimmer?
Using the vacuum method is a good way to get below the skimmer if that’s the only suction source, but it may try to draw air if it’s not completely sealed. However, you can either pump some pool water into the skimmer to prevent this or have the garden hose trickle into the skimmer to keep the line free from air and preserve the prime on the pump
What causes a pool pump to run without water?
If you uncover the skimmers so air can get in, the pump will un-prime and run without water….causing damage most of the time. If you had a shut-off valve to the skimmers only AND it was closed, then it would pull from the main drain but that doesn’t sound like the situation.

What happens if the water level drops below the skimmer?
I have a main drain and a skimmer as you described. If the water level drops below the level of the skimmer the main drain does not keep up. The pump will draw air from the empty skimmer basket and loose prime. As long as nothing is blocked what you described sounds normal to me.
