What causes ABS drain pipe to crack?

What causes ABS drain pipe to crack?

ABS drain pipes have been known to produce these thin cracks after a few years, often this is due to stress on the pipe. During installation the pipes get forced into connection, though glued, that stress remains in the drain pipe. We can also see leaks that has resulted from movement in the building or pipe.

How long does ABS drain last?

The expected lifespan of ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) pipe is 50 to 80 years, with an average of 70 years.

When to be concerned about ABS pipe leaks?

For houses built between 1985 and 1988, perhaps extending into 1993 or even later (to allow for use of in-stock older ABS piping), inspectors, building owners, and building buyers should be particularly alert for leaks in ABS black plastic drain, waste or vent piping.

What can I use to seal leaky ABS drains?

Personally I like to continue with whatever has been used just because it looks less like a butcher job that way. And, there are some code restrictions on attaching one to the other. Attempting to seal a leaky ABS or PVC joint by applying more glue or any topical sealant such as JB Weld is iffy at best.

When did ABS black plastic drain pipe fail?

“All Black -hit,” defective black ABS plastic waste pipe manufactured in the mid 1980’s failed by cracking. The result was litigation and some damage settlements, but currently it is unlikely that a homeowner will find legal relief for newly-discovered ABS drain waste vent piping cracks and failures. at CROSS CONNECTIONS, PLUMBING.

Are there still ABS drain and vent line failures?

ABS plastic drain and vent line failures are still being discovered, as John Cranor’s photo from 2011 illustrates. This photo of cracked ABS is damage that I feel has to be related to the defective ABS that was reported years ago. I am in VA and have inspected close to 6000 homes and this was the first I have seen this issue here.

Why do Plumbers use ABS instead of PVC?

Plumbers use them exclusively for drain waste vent systems. Their advantage over PVC in this regard is their superior flexibility and resistance to extreme temperatures. Waste lines aren’t pressurized, so when a length of ABS pipe leaks, it’s usually either because a joint wasn’t glued properly or the pipe is under external stress.
