Is there a leak in the top of the sand filter?
DID THE POOL REDO (DRAIN, CLEAN, REPAINT, NEW PUMP, NEW FILTER) MAY 2019. PLASTER POOL. SALTWATER PUMP. SAND FILTER. HELP**** When I got home from work yesterday the had water spraying from the top of the sand filter (tan top) where it means the valve port (black top). I turned the breaker off around 6pm and its been off ever since.

You can get a fiberglas repair kit at Lowes for about $20. Good luck R.D. Did you lose a lot of water when you took the top of the filter off? No. I drained the filter first, but there wasn’t alot off water in it . It was about 1/2 full off sand so I’m guessing no more than 5-10 gallons.

What causes water to bypass the sand filter?
Oils collect in a sand tank, making gooey balls of gunk in the top third of the sand. Channelling. If the pump is too powerful for the filter, it can force water through unfiltered. Bypassing. The filter valve could be bypassing dirt, from a too powerful pump, or bad spider gasket or valve spring.

Sand filters, cartridge filters, fabric filters and alternative filter media. I have an older (probably 15+ years) Hayward sand filter with a top mounted multi-port valve.
