Is it safe to use antifreeze in the engine?
It’s safe to use in drinking water systems and is not dangerous like engine coolant. In your engine, you will use engine coolant in the freshwater side of the cooling system and will last several seasons. We use antifreeze in the winter to prevent freezing in the raw water side of the cooling system.
When to drain antifreeze and coolant from boat engine?
For engine coolant, there should be a plug or valve low on the engine which you can open to drain the coolant for disposal. In the spring, when it’s time to get the antifreeze from winterizing out of your engine, it’s much easier – just start the engine and it will come out with the raw water exhaust.

What happens if you don’t winterize your water system?
Antifreeze emerging from the tap. Not winterizing your boat’s freshwater and sanitation systems runs the same risk as not winterizing your boat’s engine. Unless all water is removed and replaced with antifreeze, you run the risk of a freeze destroying water lines and equipment.
What kind of antifreeze to use in winter?
In place of ethylene glycol, use non-toxic propylene glycol, like West Marine Premium Antifreeze for Engine and Water System Winterization. For northern regions where the mercury can drop below zero, we recommend antifreeze with a freeze rating of at least -100°F. Why use -100°F antifreeze when the temperature never goes below -50°F?
How to winterize an RV ( with pictures )?
All your shut-off valves should be placed in the “off’ position. A special winterizing chemical much like an anti-freeze color is placed in the lines for the winter, and all petcocks to the water heater etc. should be in the open position – unless, again, a chemical was used in which then they would be closed. Thanks!
Why do you need to put antifreeze on your water pipes?
You still need it because there is moisture remaining inside the lines, which will collect in a low area in the piping. When it freezes, this water expands, causing your pipe to crack or burst. Also, the antifreeze flushes out all the debris that may have collected in the pipes through the season.
