How long does it take for radiators to heat up after draining?
Once you’ve closed your radiator valves, it’s safe to turn your central heating and hot water back on. If you’ve been successful, your radiators should start to heat up within a few minutes. You can also check the pressure gauge on your boiler and check that it reads between 1 and 2 bars.
How do you fill a radiator after draining?
Close all bleed & drain valves Go round each radiator and close every bleed valve and drain valve and, if you have a feed and expansion tank, release the ball valve. You can then switch the mains water supply back on. After a short while, your central heating system will start to refill with water.
Why is my radiator not heating up after a drain?
IF all the rads were working fine before the drain down then it could be an air lock in the system. There are a couple of straight forward ways of trying sort it. Firstly, as previously mentioned, close down all the other rads (making a note of the number of turns on each valve you close).
What to do if one of your radiators is not working?
This is known as balancing the radiators. If you notice that the one radiator not working is one of the furthest radiators from the boiler, balancing the heating system may solve the problem. This is also the case if two or three radiators aren’t getting hot.
Why is there no hot water after a drain down?
If it has been a long time it may be sludge in the pipes or radiators that has been disturbed and is now causing a blockage else where in the system. Are all of the manual radiator valves and thermostatic valves fully open to maximise the flow while refilling.
When do central heating radiators start to fail?
As winter starts to bite and the big central heating turn on begins, your boiler starts to work its hardest. This is the time when it’s common occurrence to start experiencing various problems with your radiators.

How to get rid of a drain radiator?
1. Turned the boiler mains off and switched the heating to off 2. Closed the gate valve from the small f&e tank 3. Also closed the gate valve on the heating circuit 4. Finally for luck also closed the hot water cylinder feed gate valve 5. Then I put a hose on the drain radiator downstairs and opened it 6.
Do you need to fill radiators for central heating?
I am not a central heating engineer but the radiators need to be filled and the system pressurised in order for the diverter valve to work properly and the boiler to fire. Best advised not to turn on hot taps in case the boiler overheats.
