How is the piezo igniter connected to the electrode?
Connect the piezo igniter to the electrode (figure 3), holding the electrode about ¼” to ½” away from the shell of the heater with the insulated pliers depress the piezo igniter. If a spark is present every time the igniter is pressed, the piezo igniter is fine, if no spark is seen, replace the piezo igniter. Piezo Igniter Figure 2 Figure 1
What should I do if my water heater igniter does not work?
Click to remove this tagging. The igniters on water heaters tend to be extremely reliable, and if they fail they do not normally do so intermittently in my experience. Make sure the wire is connected at the bottom of the push button that makes the igniter spark.
What is the name of the push button igniter?
Piezo Igniter: The piezo igniter (figure 1) is also known as the “push button” igniter. The piezo igniter generates a spark that is transferred to the ignition source.
Why is my water heater not producing a spark?
For the State GS640YBRS natural gas water heater, what is the more common cause of the piezo igniter not producing a spark? Or other? If the piezo isn’t producing a spark, it’s either faulty or grounded on something. Is there a reason to suspect the burner assembly? – Comintern Sep 22 ’16 at 0:42
Why is my piezo igniter not producing a spark?
I then returned to redo the process, but then the piezo igniter was not producing a spark. Coincidentally, when the plumber was here a few weeks earlier installing gas line, he too had a bit of difficulty getting the piezo to ignite the pilot.

What should spark gap be on gas water heater?
The spark gap is factory set (0.125″) and should be maintained. When troubleshooting lighting problems, it is recommended to test them first. Turn the gas OFF to the water heater and press the piezo igniter. Once pressed, the electrode should release the spark. Check if the wire connection is tightened correctly.
