How does a 50 amp hot tub get power?
To get power I’m planning to use the power that is going to my hot tub (50 amp). The hot tub has a 50 amp breaker from the main to a 50 amp breaker box that is mounted on the side of my house. I plan to disconnect the hot tub and run the wire to my shed from this breaker box.
Can you use a 60 amp breaker on a 50 Amp heater?
It’s possible but probably not likely that the existing wire can handle the larger current. The heater is probably not rated for the larger breaker, so even if the wire is big enough, still might be a real bad idea. BP’s right here. A 60 amp breaker would require #6 wire. Is that the size of your wiring?
Can a hot tub draw a 50A breaker?
The hot tub, being 95% a resistive load, is going to draw exactly what it says on the tin. It may draw it for more than 3 hours, so most likely, if they are calling out a 50A breaker, they are drawing 39.9A. Why? Because continuous loads must be derated by 125%, and 125% of 39.9A is 49.9A, which is good for a 50A breaker.
Can a 50 amp sub panel be used?
Especially when it is raining! Using a larger sub panel will not be a problem but the breaker must stay a 50 AMP in the main panel. You can utilize the 50 Amp breaker in the hot tub panel as a connection point for the new wire run or just use that junction as a splice point.
How many amps does a hot tub draw?
My guess is that your hot tub will draw between 33 and 40 amps at 240 volts with everything on heater, pump and whatever else it has. The hot tub, being 95% a resistive load, is going to draw exactly what it says on the tin. It may draw it for more than 3 hours, so most likely, if they are calling out a 50A breaker, they are drawing 39.9A. Why?
Can a hot tub be run from a 60A breaker?
Ideally you would use a clamp meter around the hot wires in order to measure this, but alternatively you could add up the loads on the circuit. If you subtract this value from 60, and you have enough capacity for the tub, then it should be OK to run from that sub-panel.

Can a 50A breaker be connected to a 60A breaker?
The 50A breaker will be protecting the wiring to the tub (and internals of the tub). The 60A breaker is protecting the wiring to the subpanel (and its internals). You can do this if you want and you will be perfectly fine.
