How do you fix a bad soldering job?
Just heat the joint up with your torch, once the solder starts to melt use Channel locks to pull the fittings apart. Once the joint is apart, wipe as much old solder off as you can with a rag. Now you can start over. Clean, Flux, solder.
Can you overheat solder?
Overheated solder joints can result from the soldering iron temperature being set too high, or result from solder failing to flow, possibly due to the surface of the pad or lead already having a layer of oxide, preventing sufficient heat transfer and therefore leaving you heating the joint for too long.
Why will my solder not stick?
A classic reason solder won’t stick to something is because you’re not getting it hot enough. My interns come to me with this problem all the time. Make sure the tip of the iron is nice and shiny. Touch some solder on it, and it should melt almost instantly.
Can you use super glue instead of solder?
super glue (cyanoacrylate glue) is a good insulator. i have heard of people using it to provide extra hold on wire wrap boards. its not doing the job of solder though, its not providing the electrical connection but rather just keeping it from coming unwrapped. Plastic tape is an insulator.
What should I do if my solder is not working?
You can remove solder with a solder sucker or solder wick. If the solder wick isn’t working well, apply a little flux first to the wick. Generally, as long as the joint is shiny you have a good joint. A dull colour indicates trouble. If you re-melt a joint and the colour goes dull then the solder has probably oxidized.
What causes solder to not flow on surface mount?
Here we have three pins of a surface mount component where the solder has not flowed onto the solder pad. This is caused by heating the pin instead of the pad. Repair: This is easily repaired by heating the solder pad with the tip of the iron, then applying solder until it flows and melts together with the solder already on the pin.
What to do if you have too much solder in your bike?
The solder bond will be poor and the cracks may develop in the joint over time. Repair: Cold joints can usually be repaired by simply re-heating the joint with a hot iron until the solder flows. Many cold joints (such as the one pictured) also suffer from too much solder. The excess solder can usually be drawn-off with the tip of the iron.
What happens if there is not enough solder in a joint?
A solder starved joint simply does not have enough solder. It may make good electrical contact, but it is hard to verify by inspection. In any case, it is not a strong joint and may develop stress cracks and fail over time.

What to do if your solder tip is black?
Your soldering iron should be set to +100°C of the solders melting point. The tip will be oxidized if you overheat it. The tip gets black and solder is not sticking to it anymore. It just drips off. Turn off your soldering iron… if you are not going to solder for 3-5 minutes. This prevents the tip from oxidizing.
