Does a jet pump need a foot valve?
Nearly all well pumping systems, one line jet pump, two line jet pump, or submersible well pump, require a foot valve installed at the bottom of the well piping.
How much does it cost to replace a foot valve in a well?
The cost to replace a well pump foot valve can be anywhere from $200-$5,000. The cost of a foot valve itself can range from $15 to $150, based on size and material. On average, the cost of a well pump foot valve is around $30. Additionally, the installation cost is very variable, depending on the depth of your well.
Can a foot valve stuck closed?
You might see the pressure gauge jump, but it will usually drop back off fairly quickly. You could have a stuck footvalve, a plugged nozzle, or an internal pump problem that could lead to the scenarios that you seem to be describing.
When to use a foot valve in a jet pump?
A foot-valve is only used in a jet-pump situation (where the pump resides above ground and shoots some water down the well to help lift more water back up).
Where is the pressure tank on a jet pump?
The pressure tank is usually located very close to the jet pump but it could be elsewhere. Well Jet and Well Piping Foot Valve is a venturi device through which the two line jet pump sends water to collect and bring still more water back into the building. See WELL PIPING FOOT VALVES for details.
How does a jet pump work in a well?
Well Jet & Foot Valve Clearance from Well Bottom: (not shown) means that the well piping, bottom venturi, and foot valve are inserted into the well some distance from the very bottom of the well (inches to a few feet). We need this clearance to reduce the tendency of the well pump to pick up mud and debris from the bottom of the well.
Where is the shut off valve on my jet pump?
The pipe going to the shut off valve is 1/2 copper with no leaks. Due to the pump location this pipe is mounted on the outside of my inside wall and is in plain site, I have no copper pipe outside the camp as I use the camp very often during the winter months. All of the inside plumbing is visible and there are no leaks.
How do you replace a foot valve on a well?
It would pump lots of water after prime but would not build any pressure. We replaced mechanical seal, front seal, diaphragm, guide vane, and impeller. No pressure, so we pulled the PVC 1 inch from the steel pipe (60 ft) and replaced the jet, and put a new foot valve on the bottom of the jet.

What causes a foot valve to not work?
When the system doesn’t hold pressure on the well side I think there are no leaks in piping, check valves, foot valve, pump body. So when a pump still won’t develop pressure I think that there is an impeller, seal, or voltage problem. Sometimes a 240V pump will work at low voltage or even at 120V depending on its design, but will be weak.
