Can you transfer oil from one tank to another?
If you have oil left in your old heating oil tank after replacing it with a new one, you can save on fuel expenses by transferring the remaining heating oil to the new tank. All it takes is an inexpensive and easy-to-use siphon pump available at your local hardware store.
How do you siphon oil out of a tank?
Purchase a siphon pump (see Resources, below). With one of these pumps, you can pump out the fuel oil by hand. Insert one end of the pump into the fuel tank and the other end into the disposal container. Pump until the fuel oil tank is empty.
When should I replace my indoor oil tank?
The average home heating oil tank will last somewhere between 15-30 years. Some insurance companies and local city ordinances will require you to replace the tank between the 15-20 year mark for safety reasons, but with proper care, a tank could reasonably last much longer.
Do you have to put new oil tank in same place as old oil tank?
In most cases, the new oil tank will go in the same location as the old tank. It makes of sense to go with this option if you don’t want to reroute your lines to a different location. If you’re replacing your tank because it’s coming to the end of its warranty and perhaps started to lose efficiency, the old location is probably fine.

Unfortunately, leaks in the oil tank cannot be repaired, and the tank must be removed in order to clean up the surrounding soil. Faulty or corroded fuel lines can be another reason why oil may be present in the soil. If the oil contamination is not extensive, the fuel lines, unlike the tank itself, can be repaired.
