Can you run pool heater without pump?
If hooked up correctly, the heater will need to detect water flow in order for it to turn on. So to answer your question, yes the pump will need to be running.
How long does it take for a pool heater to turn on?
The heater will kick in as expected right after the switch is flipped but after about 45 seconds or so, the “Service System” light goes on and the burner shuts off (but not the blower).
Why does my pool heater keep going on and off?
After about 45 seconds, the red service light goes off, the green “Heating” light flashes, and then the burner kicks in again (the heating light goes solid at that point). This cycle repeats endlessly, significantly extending out the time needed to get the spa or pool to the right temps.

Where is the thermal regulator on a pool heater?
If you have scale built up in the heat exchanger you will see scale deposits after you pull the regulator. It is located behind the threaded plug between the inlet/outlet connectors. You can unthread the plug with a screwdriver shaft. The thermal regulator may also be stuck closed.

Why is my pool heater cycling on and off?
If you are running your variable speed pump on the low setting, make sure you meet the minimum GPMs for your heater. If your swimming pool heater is cycling ON and OFF, it is an early indication that the electrical connection or power supply is experiencing issues.
What to do if your swimming pool heater is not working?
Make sure that the pilot is lit (millivolt heaters). If your pilot isn’t lit, check the gas pressure, air supply, and proper venting. Make sure the pilot tube is intact and not clogged. For MV heaters, if the pilot won’t stay lit, check the output on the thermocouple. Is the gas supply valve in the ON position?
