Can a pool pump be higher than the pool?
In-ground pool pumps are commonly ‘self-priming’, which means that they can create enough suction to lift water vertically, as much as ten (10) feet in most cases. However, when pumps are more than a few feet above the pool water level, it can become easy to develop pool priming issues.
Where should the pool water level be?
No matter what your pool size is, your water level should be halfway up your skimmer plate. Just to remind you, your skimmer is the rectangular opening that is built onto the size of your pool wall and connects to your greater circulation system.
Should a pool pump be lower than water level?
Priming a pump means filling the intake with water. Keeping an eye on the pool water level is a must – don’t let it drop below the skimmer opening. If the pump has no water to pull from the skimmer, it will draw air instead and lose prime which leads to running dry.
Why is my pool pump not filling up with water?
If your pump basket does not fill with water, you’ll have to prime the pump. Remove the pump lid and clean any debris from the pump basket, then fill it with water using a garden hose. Once done, replace the pump lid and set the pool return to open on the diverter valve so water can return to the pool.

What to do if your pool pump is above water level?
Try using a hose and pour water over various parts of the plumbing. If the churning water disapears, you have found where the leak is. Above ground pools and in rare cases inground pools have flooded suction pumps. These pumps need to be located below the pool water level because they are not capable of “pulling” a prime on their own and depend on gravity to keep them primed.
