Are solar pool heaters worth the money?
You can significantly reduce swimming pool heating costs by installing a solar pool heater. They’re cost competitive with both gas and heat pump pool heaters, and they have very low annual operating costs. Actually, solar pool heating is the most cost-effective use of solar energy in many climates.
Do you need a pump for solar pool heater?
If you put the collector on the ground, almost any pump will do the job. If you can put the collector below the surface of the pool, you can get help from siphon physics. You need wiring, a solar collector, piping, and a PV module. A 12VDC panel should be strong enough to power your pump.
Why a heat pump is better than solar pool heating?
The energy used to heat the water is free, and your only running cost is for the pump to take the water to the roof. Unlike solar pool heating, a heat pump takes natural heat from the air and converts it to heat energy, which it uses to raise the temperature of your pool. Heat pumps are extremely efficient.
How many solar panels do you need to run a pool pump?
Most residential pools operate with one or two horsepower solar heater pumps with variable speed options. On average, these pumps will draw about 800 watts per horsepower of energy per hour. Depending upon the panel size, 4 – 6 solar panels are needed to operate a solar-powered pool pump.
Can you run a pool heat pump on solar?
Solar pool heating is NOT free. You still need to run a pump to make the water flow through the solar collector. This can be expensive as the pump needs to run during the day when electricity is charged at peak rates. Heating will then also be determined if the sun is out or if it’s cloudy.

How much energy does IntelliFlo pool pump save?
An Eco Select® Brand Choice: Standard pool pumps can consume as much energy as all other home appliances combined, often costing residential pool owners more than $1,000 per year! IntelliFlo pumps can typically cut energy use up to 90%, generally saving up to $1,500 in utility costs annually…more where rates are higher than average.*
Is the IntelliFlo pool pump compatible with Pentair?
Fully compatible with Pentair Automation and Controls and other brands of digital pool/spa controls for managing pump, heating, lighting, spa jets and water features The IntelliFlo Variable Speed Pump is designed to maximize the convenience and efficiency provided by Pentair Automation Systems.
How does the IntelliFlo variable speed and flow pump work?
IntelliFlo VSF pump is the first variable speed and flow pump that adjusts to changes in flow conditions to maintain its preprogrammed flow rate to run optimally throughout the entire filtration cycle. It’s like having cruise control for your pump.
How are variable speed pumps affect solar pool heaters?
Gas heaters can require very high flow rates, increasing pumping costs substantially. Solar pool heaters will operate at very low flow rates, albeit with lower performance, where other heaters may not operate at all.
Can a solar pool heater be used with a solar heater?
In either case, integrating a solar pool heater with a new pool has some important considerations. In the case of a single speed 3/4 HP pump, you are walking a fine line between energy savings and having enough flow to achieve good solar pool heating performance.
